Simple Search Help

What am I searching?

You are searching "Digibaeck" a subset of LBI collections that includes all digitized content. This includes the vast majority of the archival collections, manuscripts, and memoirs, all of the oral history collections, and some important objects in the art and library collections. Every search result contains a direct link to view the digitized object or a link to a "finding aid" that describes a large or complex object and links to specific items within it.

How can I narrow or expand my results?

  • "Franz Rosenzweig"
Searching for a phrase enclosed in double quotes will return all records that contain the exact phrase.
  • +Rosenzweig +Buber
This search will return all records containing both terms.
  • -Moses +Mendelssohn
This search will return all records that contain Mendelssohn but do not contain moses.
  • sing*
This search will match terms like sing, sings, singer, singing, etc.
  • *stein
This search will match terms like Bernstein, Eppstein, Falkenstein, etc.
  • *stein*
This search will match terms like Bernstein, Einstein, Steiner-Prag, Steinthal, etc.

How are the results sorted?

By default, the results are sorted by a combination of relevancy and content type, with books and archival collections listed first, followed by other content types such as photographs. You can use the filters to the right of the search results to jump directly to a specific content type, such as "photographs", "memoirs" or "paintings".

What if I don’t find what I am looking for?

There’s a chance it might be in LBI collections but it has not been digitized (yet!). To search everything in LBI collections, try a comprehensive search.
